Congratulations to Justice Neil Gorsuch

Congratulations to Justice Neil Gorsuch

Fox News reports that as many as five new SCOTUS seats are likely to be filled under Trump's administration, and there is no reason to think that any of these appointees will be anything but conservative. And next time Democrats control the White House and the Senate, they could be the ones to benefit from the rules change enacted under McConnell, since it will apply to all future Supreme Court nominees, too, eliminating any need for input from the minority party in making confirmations to the high court. Then McConnell raised a point of order, suggesting that Supreme Court nominees should not be subjected to a 60-vote threshold but instead a simple majority in the 100-member Senate. Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin III of West Virginia - joined 51 Republicans to support Gorsuch. Sen. One Republican senator, Johnny Isakson of Georgia, abstained from the vote.

"[Republicans] made history in denying a presidential nominee a hearing and a vote, which had never, never happened before in the history of the United States", said Democrat Dick Durbin of IL.

Re: "Senate triggers "nuclear option" over Neil Gorsuch's Supreme Court nomination," April 6 news story.

Republicans exulted in the victory.

"It's a great day, indeed", said McConnell in a telephone interview Friday afternoon after the vote.

"Mitch did what he thought was the right thing at the time, and I think the American people agreed with it, as was evidenced by the outcome of the election", said Sen.

What does this mean for future Supreme Court nominations?

Dianne Feinstein of California, the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

So why did Democrats mount this unprecedented partisan filibuster? "Republican Senators forever lowered the bar for Supreme Court nominees just to get him on the Court, and will bear responsibility for his judgments", Murphy said.

Bashar Assad Tells AFP That Chemical Attack Was Western 'Fabrication'
Since the U.S. strike on Syria last week, 162 barrel bombs have been dropped by Syrian government helicopters, the report states. Assad's government told the organization it had a 1,300-ton stockpile of chemical weapons and chemicals used to make them.

US says North Korean missile test ended in fiery crash
Despite angry opposition from Beijing, the United States last month started to deploy the first elements of THAAD in South Korea. On February 11, Pyongyang said it had successfully tested a new ballistic missile powered by a solid-fuel engine.

Late NFL player Konrad Reuland donated his heart to Rod Carew
The cross-sport donation from Reuland to Carew may be freaky in itself, but the story gets weirder as it does more sentimental. Clues appeared such as Carew's wife being told the donor had been a very healthy local male and had been in his late 20s.

Furious Democrats objected until the end, but their efforts to block Judge Neil Gorsuch failed as expected. Not only does he possess unquestionably impressive credentials, but he has also demonstrated a deep and abiding understanding of the proper role of a judge under the Constitution.

The Senate's approval of Mr Gorsuch, 49, reinstates the nine-seat court's 5-4 conservative majority, fulfilling an important campaign promise made by the Republican President.

Gorsuch was an outspoken supporter of religious objectors in two cases involving the Affordable Care Act.

Judge Gorsuch is one of, if not the, most qualified Supreme Court nominees in our nation's history.

Alito had argued cases in front of the justices, but he said it didn't prepare him for the building's confusing layout or the view from the bench.

On Monday, Gorsuch is scheduled to meet with Chief Justice John Roberts at the Supreme Court for a private ceremony where the Colorado native will sworn-in as the country's 101st Associate Justice.

Trump has recorded accomplishments since taking office on January 20, including a variety of unilateral executive actions such as moving to undo Obama's climate change regulations.
