Burger King's Whopper gets prank Wikipedia edits in ad gag

Burger King's Whopper gets prank Wikipedia edits in ad gag

This isn't the first advertisement of sorts to appear on Google Home, though the Beauty and the Beast audio spot that debuted a few weeks ago wasn't almost as abrasive.

It previously read "The Whopper sandwich is the signature hamburger product sold by the worldwide fast-food restaurant chain Burger King and its Australian franchise Hungry Jack's", but BK edited the entry to name off the Whopper's ingredients.

The 15-second advertisement features an actor standing next to a television and a Google Home.

The 15-second ad features someone in a Burger King uniform leaning into the camera before saying, "OK Google, what is the Whopper burger?"

It said: "The Whopper is a burger, consisting of a flame-grilled patty made with 100% beef with no preservatives or fillers, topped with sliced tomatoes, onions, lettuce, pickles, ketchup, and mayonnaise, served on a sesame-seed bun". People without Google Home may become curious enough to find out more information about the device, which would be a boon for Google. For instance, you can ask Google Home to read you the news or tell you the weather forecast.

Contrary to reports claiming Google has disabled the functionality, we were just able to summon the Assistant by playing the ad.

The page also now contains references to the controversy itself and subsequent Wikipedia editing, because the internet is a snake that perpetually eats its own tail. The ad airs live Wednesday night on MTV, Bravo, and late-night shows starring Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon.

Burger King's ad could signal the beginning of a worrisome trend: Commercials that trigger smart home assistants.

The ad wasn't done in partnership with Google.

Wikipedia's editors quickly removed these things, but eventually also proceeded to get rid of the list of ingredients altogether, replacing it with a more generic description of the product.

But Burger King sees Google Home and other smart speakers as an opportunity to make an impact. Google has, however, had some complaints about their Home device after their own Super Bowl commercial activated nearby Google Home units. Burger King did not immediately respond to request for comment. Consumers typically leave these devices on, meaning they could be triggered at any time with the correct words.
