Trump's tax return got Rachel Maddow her highest ratings ever

"The bombshell here is that some of his tax returns have been made public for the first time, when he's been trying to hard to keep them secret", Maddow explained.

The White House said in a statement on Tuesday that Trump, as head of the Trump Organization, had a responsibility "to pay no more tax than legally required".

Some 4.1 million people reportedly watched Rachel Maddow reveal that Donald Trump paid nearly $40 million in taxes for 2005.

Interest in Trump's tax returns is high because he has refused to release them and concerns they may reveal ties to Russian Federation, something he has denied but of interest in light of the Kremlin's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Rachel Maddow is seen on the set of "The Tonight Show" Wednesday.

Despite some criticism of how the show played out, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow scored her biggest audience ever on Tuesday after tweeting that she had gotten her hands on some of President Donald Trump's tax records for 2005.

Trump has feuded with the media since his inauguration, often accusing it of promoting "fake news" meant to undermine his presidency.

Maddow teased her audience almost 90 minutes before the show began that she "seriously" had the president's tax returns. The narrative that Trump paid little or no taxes has dogged Trump since the GOP primary battle.

It seems journalists were both inconsistent in how they treated Trump vs. Obama and lacked a basic understanding of how paying taxes works. Maddow's story showed that he paid much more than many expected, even exceeding the tax rate paid by his political opponents, including Sen.

Maddows's approach was in keeping with how she conducts her highly rated show every night.

He added: "Looking forward to a big rally in Nashville, Tennessee, tonight".
