Planned Parenthood president on GOP health care plan

Planned Parenthood swiftly rejected Monday a proposal by President Donald Trump that would have pledged his support for federal funding for the women's health organization if it ceased providing abortion services.

"Let's be clear: Federal funds already do not pay for abortions", Dawn Laguens, the executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, told The New York Times. It appears to be high number, but it also means that 98 percent of women of reproductive age will never go to a Planned Parenthood in any given year for health care.

"This is for patients who rely on us/ We're often the only healthcare provider they'll see all year", said Judy Tabar, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England.

Planned Parenthood supporters across the Southern Finger Lakes region assembled outside of Congressman Tom Reed's (R-N.Y.) Ithaca office downtown and protested the proposed GOP replacement for the Affordable Care Act on Tuesday. The deal was, if Planned Parenthood would stop performing abortion services, the nonprofit could maintain its federal funding.

Sen. Andrew A. Serafini (R-Washington), a member of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, which must approve the bill for it to advance, said he opposed the funding because Planned Parenthood provides women with abortion, among other health services.

Trump pointed to polling showing that most Americans do not favour federal funding for abortions.

But he said there are other organizations - such as locally run pregnancy centers - that also provide the same health services as Planned Parenthood, but they don't get public funding. "And it is not their choice how we live our lives and our access to health care".

The Post noted that, while some Planned Parenthood affiliates sometimes host "free mammography mobile vans" for low-income or uninsured women, no affiliates have mammogram machines in their clinics. These politicians say they care about life, but their other political stances seem to take the opposite approach. "Providing safe and legal abortion is central to our mission of giving all people the care and information they need to make their own decisions", she wrote.

"But, I would defund Planned Parenthood because of the fact that they work on abortion", Trump said last February.

"Planned Parenthood is where I get a lot of my health care because I can't afford to go to more expensive places", said Read.
