Pence demands apology from AP for showing Second Lady's personal email address

Vice President Mike Pence is now responding to claims he used a personal email account to conduct business during his time of Governor of IN, a story that first appeared IN a report from our newsgathering partners at the Indianapolis Star.

Primary points in the letter from Pence's legal counsel were that the publication of Mrs. Pence's private email address had subjected her to "vitriolic and malicious" messages, as well as creating security concerns, and that the news organization had refused to remove Mrs. Pence's email address from the article, or issue a correction.

Vice President Pence on Saturday called on the Associated Press to apologize for publishing his wife's private email address in a story earlier this week. The vice president also posted a detailed letter addressed to Gary Pruitt, AP's president and CEO, demanding an apology for a story the news agency published Friday.

Lauren Easton, the AP's director of media relations, said in a statement: "AP removed [Karen Pence's] email address from subsequent stories after learning Mrs Pence still used the account".

"The AP stands by its story, which addresses important transparency issues", Easton said.

Attorneys for Pence delivered the emails Thursday to be archived for public review as required under IN law, the Indianapolis Star reported.

Meanwhile, thirteen boxes of emails from Vice President Mike Pence's term as IN governor have been turned over to state government as of Saturday morning, about two months after an earlier attempt didn't work, a spokesman said.

Mike Pence will be the first USA vice president to deliver the commencement address at the University of Notre Dame, which traditionally invites the president during his first year in office.

Pence's emails were released after IndyStar discovered that the vice president used a personal email account to conduct business.

'As Governor, Mr Pence fully complied with IN law regarding email use and retention. It is not illegal for the governor to have a personal email account, according to the paper. "Now we commend the Federal Bureau of Investigation in this case for following the facts because in America, no one is above the law".

The news regarding Pence's email is significant because former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state was repeatedly denounced by the then Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Pence in the run-up to the presidential elections previous year.

Pence spokesman Marc Lotter told the Indianapolis Star that any comparisons between Pence and Clinton was "absurd".

Pence used his personal AOL account to discuss state work periodically from the start of his administration in 2013.
