Patriots acquire Dwayne Allen from Colts

After the Indianapolis Colts made a decision to bring back tight end Jack Doyle on a long-term deal Tuesday night, the writing seemed to be on the wall for the Colts' other tight end Dwayne Allen.

The New England Patriots are trading for Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen, reports NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. However, just because Allen lost favor with the Colts doesn't mean he won't be able to put up big numbers with the Patriots.

With Martellus Bennett due to leave for greener pastures, the Patriots have identified his replacement as Rob Gronkowski's sidekick. The Patriots may look to pair Allen with Gronkowski on the field. That led the Patriots to Bennett. He could be a solid complementary piece for Rob Gronkowski as a three-down tight end.

Don't question the Patriots' ability to scout the rest of the NFL.

Allen, at 6-foot-3, 265 pounds, is one of the top blocking tight ends in the NFL.

Former Celtic player and manager Tommy Gemmell dies at 73
The Scottish champions announced on Thursday that Gemmell had passed away following a long battle against illness. He won six Scottish league titles and seven domestic cups with Celtic , and played 18 times for Scotland.

Allen had 35 catches for 406 yards and six touchdowns previous year. And as has been speculated with Scott Chandler and Bennett, perhaps the Patriots intend to employ the two-tight-end formation once again as a key part of their offensive game plan in the coming season.

Allen doesn't have the receiving pedigree of Bennett.

In five years with the Colts, Allen played in 57 games (starting 56) and caught 126 passes for 1,451 yards and 19 touchdowns.

It's also worth noting this is a risky trade for the Colts. This is the second straight year the team has traded for a tight end, as they acquired Bennett via trade last offseason. Patriots head coach and GM Bill Belichick jumped at the chance to potentially fleece new Colts personnel man Chris Ballard.
