Microsoft ready to block updates for Windows 7 on latest PCs

The Windows 10 Creators Update is almost here.

With previous operating systems, Microsoft has been willing to extend support if you're big enough and have the cash.

This was expected sooner or later, but the software giant could be a little too harsh, as it is now forcing users to upgrade to Windows 10 instead of continuing to use the older operating systems.

You don't just block updates, effectively bringing forward the end-of-life of an operating system by five years because you want the "best experience". With no patches coming through, your PC will be open to all sorts of potential exploits and security holes - much like those still running the hopelessly outdated Windows XP.

"When we begin the phased rollout of the developer kits this month, the kits will include the Acer headset, along with documentation and access to Windows 10 Insider preview builds and the software development kit (SDK) to enable developers to build mixed reality applications", said Alex Kipman, Technical Fellow, Microsoft. Instead, it was meant to avoid large automatic downloads in order to prevent Windows 10 updates from blowing through a user's bandwidth cap.

So what next for the Vista user?

In advance of an expected Windows 10 Creators Update, owners of newer systems with Intel 7th-gen "Kaby Lake" chips, AMD Ryzen chips are reporting that their systems aren't receiving Windows 7 or 8.1 updates anymore.

However experts are warning that many Vista-era PCs may not have the necessary specs to run a newer Microsoft OS. If you think that's overkill, consider the Windows 10 Anniversary Update's slew of nasty bugs, or this tale of woe over at How-To-Geek, where Chris Hoffman complains about Windows 10's automatic updates breaking his PC mere days ago. And there is no guarantee the convoluted upgrade to Windows 10 would work properly, as the dreaded driver issue could rear its ugly head. The first option, which the company recommends because it will give users the latest security features in a timely fashion, is simply accepting the update when it's available. We're close to Microsoft signing-off on the Creators Update now, so these builds should be "final build" quality.
