Locals take part in 'A Day Without a Woman' nationwide protest

I'm fortunate enough to have a job that will let me take paid leave to care for my son during an unexpected day off.

The national strike movement on Wednesday coincides with International Women's Day.

The Day Without a Woman, on March 8, is the latest political action organized by the group of activists behind January's Women's March.

"These issues occupied a central place in the agenda of 1970s feminists, such as the "wages for housework" campaign".

The complaints bore echoes of broader debate about the strike's message if only those who can afford to take the day off to participate.

While International Women's Day has earned many supporters around the world, some parents aren't happy with schools closing because of the related "Day Without A Woman" protest.

The event has led to the closure of schools in Alexandria, Va., North Carolina's Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School District and NY due to the anticipated staff shortages.

She says women make the vast majority of choices and decisions about how money will be spent, and they are the power behind the spending money for their families and their households.

Love said she hopes the Day Without a Woman draws attention to the value women hold in society, showing that "women's work makes up the backbone of the country".

"For my congresswoman and senators, because they are fighting for women and women's rights, I'm going to thank them for the work", said Block, 26. "My work is very supportive of using your vacation time however you see fit, so that's what I did", said participant Julia Roberts. "We strike for them", organizers note on their website.

"I felt I had the duty to come out and represent and support equality the best I can", said Descoteaux.

"The goal is to highlight the economic power and significance that women have in the USA and global economies, while calling attention to the economic injustices women and gender nonconforming people continue to face", the Women's March website says.
