IPhone 8: USB-C Confusion

Kuo goes on to address two key reasons why Apple would be best served refraining from such a transition to USB-C: first and foremost, to sustain royalties from the company's vast and far-reaching Lightning accessories ecosystem; and second, to ensure the company's leverage in maintaining the most compact form factor possible for the iPhone. But all is not lost.

Instead, the iPhone 8 will utilize "Type-C Power Delivery" technology for faster charging, AppleInsider reports, citing a note from Kuo. The Lightning port's design is a bit slimmer than that of the USB Type-C port, which should help with that.

Kuo notes that while the iPhone 7S, 7S Plus and 8 will all feature the fast charging support, the OLED-equipped iPhone 8 "may have a faster charging speed thanks to a 2-cell L-shaped battery pack design". This didn't settle well in the stomachs of many, so KGI Securities' analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is back to clear some of this confusion up (via MacRumors).

Kuo believes that Apple will be adopting the power management tech from Texas Instruments, while the power delivery chips will be taken from Cypress.

S&P, Dow hit record highs on Trump's policy comments
But on Tuesday investors said there were risks that Trump's speech later in the day could disappoint, triggering a sell-off. Investors have also cheered data confirming an economic recovery in Europe and a turn around in company earnings.

Apple launched their flagship smartphones, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, in September past year and while many criticised it for lacking new features and innovation, the Cupertino giant ended up selling the highest number of iPhones ever in the last quarter of 2016.

Apple has always been rumoured to be forethought something momentous for its next release, which will mark ten years after all the set afloat of its first ever iPhone. The port itself will remain in-place though, allowing customers to continue using the same cables and connectors. A USB-C power cord (with a lightning connector for the phone) would mean you could plug a new iPhone into the latest MacBook Pro, but you'd need a different cord or an adapter to plug it into older MacBooks and PCs.

Despite the Wall Street Journal report, I'm willing to bet a lot of money that the next generation iPhone (as well as any new iPads and iPod touch devices rolled out this year) will retain the now-traditional Lightning connection.

With an Edge to Edge display, the iPhone 8 will be similar in size like the 4.7 inch iPhone. The Lightning connector was launched with the iPhone 5 in 2012.
