Durban loses hosting rights for 2022 Commonwealth Games

Durban has lost the right o host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after failing to meet its bid commitments.

Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula admitted two weeks ago the city was facing an uphill battle to host the Games amid the fight over funding.

Reports had suggested that the CGF was weighing up its options and that a decision was expected this week, but on Monday afternoon reports across the country began calling the news.

When rumours about Durban's ability to host the Games first emerged, the city of Liverpool said it would be willing to take over.

The Commonwealth Games first took place in 1930.

Sascoc president Gideon Sam confirmed the news, saying the news was a disappointment to the country and the entire continent. The event, held every four years, is open to athletes from more than 50 nations.

Mayor Joe Anderson has written to sports minister Tracey Crouch to express the city's interest.

"We are sad, of course we are, but particularly for the people of South Africa", Grevemberg told insidethegames.

"It does not look like we will find each other", he said.
