Dalton jobless rate rises to highest in the state

Nationally, unemployment rates were lower than a year earlier in 205 of the 388 metropolitan areas included in the labor department's January-to-January report.

Unemployment rates in January in neighboring counties were 5.7 percent in Jefferson, 6 percent in Clearfield, 6.1 percent in Cambria, 5 percent in Westmoreland and 6.6 percent in Armstrong.

The annual number of layoffs and discharges, after increasing over the past two years, declined to 19.9 million from 20.9 million the previous year.

Initial unemployment insurance claims for the week ended March 11 trickled down to an advance figure of 241,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's seasonally adjusted unrevised level of 243,000, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday. The county's jobless rate was at 5.7 percent a year ago in January 2016.

Compared to January 2016, the rates were down in all areas. Job losses came in professional and business services, along with trade, transportation and warehousing.

The number of initial claims for unemployment insurance, a measure of new layoffs, rose by 138, or 17.7 percent, to 917. Most of the increase came in construction and arts, entertainment and recreation. The state insured unemployment rate is 2.6 percent, 1.1 percentage points above the national rate.

The labor force includes those who are employed and those without jobs but actively looking for work. In Dade County, the jobless rate in January rose by 0.3 percent to 5.3 percent. The number of employed residents dropped from 10,012 to 9,974 while the number of unemployed residents grew from 564 to 632. The number of unemployed residents rose by 2,726 to 23,887, while the number of employed residents decreased by 1,094 to 387,721.

IL recorded the second largest increase, behind NY, in the number of initial claims for the week ended March 4, at a gain of 2,552, 548 less than the year-ago period.

The Metro area with the highest unemployment rate is Rocky Mount, and Asheville had the lowest rate at 4.6 percent. It was 5.6 percent in January 2016.
