Law professor Stephen Gillers, referring to Democratic Senators Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. Mukasey declined to comment on Sunday.

Coffee said a Republican administration would be more likely to favor prosecuting suspected terrorists and racketeers than banks, pharmaceutical companies and public corruption.

It is customary, though not automatic, for the country's 93 USA attorneys to leave their positions once a new president is in office. They usually leave office when a new president is elected, although some remain for months to help with the transition. It includes Manhattan and has seen prosecutions of cases involving militant violence and financial crimes. He snagged around 80 insider trading convictions and a record $9 billion fine slapped on France's BNP for sanctions busting.

Bharara stoked theories that he got sacked for reasons having to do with his reputation for going after corrupt politicians when he tweeted: 'By the way, now I know what the Moreland Commission must have felt like'. Last week, watchdog groups asked Bharara to investigate Trump's potential emoluments clause violations; plus, there's that small issue of Trump Tower being coincidentally within the jurisdiction of the SDNY.

Trump has repeatedly pledged to drain the Washington swamp.

Key positions at agencies like the State Department and the Defence Department also remain unfilled.

One person who is probably pretty happy that Bharara is gone?

Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY, was sacked by President Donald Trump even as the former's office was reportedly investigating Fox News for multiple criminal charges. He was one of 46 Obama administration holdovers who were asked to resign by the Justice Department on Friday. Hannity then declared that "Tonight, it's time for the Trump Administration to begin to purge these saboteurs before it's too late".

Preet Bharara, the Indian-born American who used to serve as the United States attorney for the Southern District of NY has revealed that he did not resign but was instead fired.

Mr. Schumer was only half-right when he said that the President's forcing out of the nation's premier U.S. Attorney said a lot more about Mr. Trump than it did about Mr. Bharara.

Giving an explanation for the call, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the "president reached out to Preet Bharara on Thursday to thank him for his service and to wish him good luck".

Sanders declined to answer questions about why Trump had changed his mind on Bharara, whether the president had made similar calls to other USA attorneys before demanding their resignations, and why the president did not try to convey his good wishes through an aide or by some other means. When Mr. Bharara seized the files of the anti-corruption panel, however, it became clear that Mr. Cuomo, after promising it would have complete independence, engaged along with his staff in attempts to steer commission officials away from probes that might have reflected badly on some of his political donors or on the Governor himself.
