Alabama jobless rate rises to 6.4 percent

Maine's 3.5 percent January jobless rate was well below the national rate for the month of 4.8 percent.

The unemployment rate for January is slightly up from the 6.5 percent rate in January 2016. The state's unemployment rate fell during the same period to 2.9 percent, the lowest level since 2.8 percent in February 2001 and down from 3 percent in December.

The national unemployment rate stands at 4.8 percent, up 0.1% from December 2016 and down 0.1 percent from January 2016. It was also well above the year-ago rate of 6.1 percent. The country has an aging population and more people are retiring. "The increased differential is because of people entering the labor force that weren't in it before".

He said some people are returning to the labor force but many who dropped out have not returned, and economists are waiting to see how permanent that drop in participation is.

Nebraska nonfarm employment also stayed above 1 million last month, the report said. "The economy is doing better", he said.

It's the first full employment report from the Labor Department under the Trump Administration.
