Tsonga downs Goffin for Rotterdam title

Tsonga downs Goffin for Rotterdam title

Top seed Cilic, who had won just one match this season before starting the indoor week, outlasted comeback candidate and fellow Croat Borna Coric 6-1 2-6 6-4 on Thursday.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga remains on course for a first ATP title since 2015 after beating Tomas Berdych to reach the final of the Rotterdam Open.

The Belgian converted his second set point to move ahead, but it only served to spark Tsonga into life.

The sixth-seeded Frenchman hit 10 aces and, although he dropped his serve twice, he broke the third-seeded Goffin's serve four times.

Tsonga was beaten by Berdych in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open in January, but gained revenge with a 6-3 6-4 victory on Saturday.

Just like Tsonga, the 3rd seed David Goffin has played great so far in Rotterdam, and he will fight in his 8th ATP title (his last crown came in Metz in 2014) after an easy 6-1 6-3 triumph over the French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert in 74 minutes. In the second set, I had another mentality on court.

Berdych is leading the head-to-head against Tsonga 8-3 and the Czech prevailed 7-5, 6-3 last fall in the Doha quarterfinals.

Goffin had lost their previous three matches, including last weekend's Sofia Open final in Bulgaria and a straight sets loss in the Australian Open quarterfinals last month.

It was Goffin who dominated the early exchanges with two breaks in the opening five games to open up a 4-1 lead and despite an immediate break back from the Frenchman it was Goffin who claimed the first set. "I started the final really well, but in the end Jo played better than me", the 26-year-old Goffin said. Modest and hard-working Belgian will remember this victory for a long time, as it finally allowed him to enter Top 10 on Monday, something he deserved long time ago.
