The Orange County Health Department and Orange Water And Sewer Authority announced that the water is safe for all uses, but also told customers to limit use because supplies remain below normal.

"OWASA tested samples from across the service area to ensure the water is safe for public consumption", Bridger said.

At least 80,000 people in Orange County are affected by a water shortage.

The outage forced Chapel Hill and Carrboro restaurants to shut down Friday and schools to dismiss early. "However, we encourage our residents to continue to practice water conservation strategies until OWASA's storage has been replenished to normal levels".

The fluoride overfeed was contained at the Jones Ferry Road Water Treatment Plant. Officials say using water could result in contamination of the OWASA system, and they're urging customers to use bottled water for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene.

OWASA customers had been ordered not to use OWASA water from Friday morning to 2 p.m. Saturday. Dining halls gave one free bottle of water to students staying on campus and portable toilets were delivered late Friday night.

The Jones Ferry Road Water Treatment Plant will return to normal operation as soon as it is safe to do so, OWASA officials said.

To make up for the drop in supplies, OWASA began receiving water from the City of Durham but the connections did not provide an adequate enough flow to fill OWASA's tanks. The closure is expected to last until about noon Sunday.
