After weeks of global pressure, Jammeh eventually conceded defeat and went into exile in Equatorial Guinea, allowing Barrow to return on January 26.

President Barrow's inauguration today also coincides with the 52nd Independence Anniversary of the small West African Country. Hundreds of thousands welcomed Barrow's return to Gambia days later. Many political prisoners have already been freed and The Gambia is set to rejoin global institutions such as the worldwide Criminal Court and the Commonwealth.

Gambia is a tiny country that draws mostly British sunbathers. He promised improved employment opportunities, food security and export growth, sanitation and access to clean water.

He was sworn in last month in a low-key event in neighbouring Senegal, where he was on exile before his predecessor agreed to step down.

"We feel happy because he is our elected president".

The ceremony took place in the presence of Heads of State of the sub region with the remarkable presence of Senegalese president Macky Sall who played a crucial role in ensuring that Barrow takes over command as deserved.

The coalition party which backed his candidacy was formed, Barrow said, "to ensure that we'll be one Gambia, one nation, one people".

"We intend to transform bad citizens into good citizens, unskilled into skilled citizens and uneducated into educated citizens", he said, adding that some of the prisoners he met are very intelligent and the government should help them harness the potentials.

Jammeh led Gambia for more than two decades.
