8-year-old girl fatally shot after Houston auto crash

On Saturday morning, around 2 a.m., an eight-year-old girl from Houston, Texas, was shot and killed by a woman in another vehicle, after she survived a auto crash.

Some time after the crash, but before officers arrived, someone opened fire on the Honda, striking eight-year-old DeMaree Atkins, who was riding in the auto with her mother.

The child was taken to the hospital after the shooting but later died, officers said.

According to police, the driver of the Pontiac jumped into the four-door sedan and fled the scene.

"I told her to stay with me, stay with me", Thomas said, breaking down into tears.

"I was going through the light and through my peripheral vision I could see a vehicle coming at a high rate of speed", Thomas said.

Police said Thomas was not injured.

Thomas's daughter was hit by gunfire. She was an honor roll student who was just beginning to learn how to play the violin. "She pulled a gun out of the window and she started shooting". And she said that before the sedan drove away, a woman in the vehicle fired at her and her daughter.

"I called her name and I said, Are you OK?" She told her daughter to stay with her, but her little body just went limp.

Police continue looking for the drivers of the Pontiac and the sedan and said they are still trying to determine a motive. "We just don't know". "I pulled her shirt up, and she got shot - the bullet went in the right and came out the left side", said the heartbroken parent. "I wanted to see her get married". No word on why the other two cars crashed into the Accord.
