Sony Entertainment CEO steps down to focus on Snapchat chairman role

As an early investor in Snapchat, co-founded by 26-year-old Evan Spiegel, Lynton has been on the company's board for four years. During his time at Sony Entertainment, he oversaw the company suffer a massive breach - which also included a trove of leaked emails between Lynton and various Snapchat executives and investors.

Tokyo-based Sony Corporation president and CEO Kazuo Hirai is scheduled to take on an enhanced hands-on role within the company's television, movie and music division. Sony's entertainment companies include Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Music Entertainment, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, and Sony Corporation of America.

Lynton started in 2004 as chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment before being named as CEO of Sony Entertainment in 2012. "I leave Sony with great pride in all we have accomplished together". In April previous year, he was appointed CEO of Sony Corporation in charge of Pictures and Music businesses.

The hack was linked to North Korea as retaliation against "The Interview", a comedy about a plot to kill North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un. Following the cyberattacks and threats of violence, Sony made a decision to cancel the movie's release, prompting outrage in Hollywood and Washington.

Today I will be announcing my resignation from Sony to focus on my position as Chairman of the Board of Snap Inc.

"As we look ahead, we see our entertainment businesses as essential parts of Sony", Hirai said. The media executive now serves as both chief executive of Sony Entertainment and Sony Pictures.

Lynton is not expected to keep a management role at Snap, the New York Times reported.

The entertainment industry is undergoing major transformative changes, and Lynton's expertise in the media and entertainment space had been invaluable.
