Red Cross warns of winter blood shortage

The American Red Cross (ARC) has issued an emergency call for blood and platelet donors after about 37,000 fewer donations were given in November and December than expected, including more than 2,000 here in the Connecticut Blood Services Region.

A blood drive will be held in Sun Prairie Tuesday, Jan. 10 at United Methodist Church, 702 North St. from 1-6 p.m. She says the cause is two-fold."It has a lot to do with hectic schedules over the holidays we know that in some parts of the country winter weather has forced us to cancel drives or just stopped people from coming out".

The Red Cross is extending hours at many donation sites to accommodate more donors.

Spokeswoman Laura McGuire explained blood is being sent to hospitals faster than it's coming in. All blood types are needed to help ensure a sufficient supply.

IVCC instructor and Red Cross volunteer Steve Swett said, "RapidPass is available which allows donors to log in the day of their appointment and fill out the health history questions". Platelet donors are also needed, particularly those with the A negative blood group. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all require blood to save their lives. "This simple act can have a profound impact on another human being", Gehrig said in the release.

If you want to follow in his footsteps, the Red Cross is holding a blood drive in Des Moines in February, and LifeServe Blood Center is always accepting donors.
