Jimmy Fallon Burns Ben Affleck in Opening Monologue

On stage, Fallon began his monologue without a teleprompter. "Already you have your Golden globes moment", he says.

Cut to: dancing, twirling "Star Wars" storm troopers and TV actors from shows including "Game of Thrones", "Westworld", "Stranger Things" and "The People v. O.J. Simpson".

After the autocue meltdown, Fallon began again, targeting U.S. president-elect Donald Trump in his monologue.

Without naming him once, Meryl Streep called out Donald Trump for his divisive politics, warning the Hollywood elite as she accepted her career achievement award that they too "belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now". You don't need to tell me.

When introducing the accounting company that tabulates the Golden Globes votes, Fallon inserted Russia's president into the group, referring to it as "the firm of Ernst & Young & Putin".

Despite rumblings of a revolt, only two Republican electors — both from Texas — cast protest votes for someone other than Trump. A joint session of Congress could still opt to challenge the result and stop Donald Trump from becoming President.

It was doomed from the start, as Fallon's prompter went on the fritz during his opening monologue and he was forced to squirm and all but beg for patience and forgiveness.

"This is the Golden Globes: One of the few places left where America honors the popular vote", Fallon said, before praising the Hollywood celebrities as "the best" in the entertainment industry. "It's an HR nightmare." - compared Trump to Game of Thrones' King Joffrey, and did a Chris Rock impression about not thanking O.J. Simpson. With Fallon at the helm, it's clear not only Fallon, but the Golden Globes themselves may have been playing it safe.

"Jimmy Fallon just isn't very good!" Fallon, who doesn't really do "mean", but does do impersonations and potentially viral video bits, is going to recreate the opening freeway musical number from La La Land, if this brief tease we found via the LA Times is any indication. And Meryl Streep's terrible opera singer from the nominated film Florence Foster Jenkins?

He later said of the technical glitch: 'I didn't memorize my monologue but I knew maybe the teleprompter might go out at one point, but I didn't imagine the first opening of the show'.
