Flu season arrives in Grant County

As of December 24, there have been three reports of flu-related deaths in patients under 65 years old in California, according to public health officials.

The department says the spread of the flu is low, but activity is increasing.

Skowronski says this year's vaccine hits the right strain, but she adds that doesn't mean people should consider themselves immune from influenza.

In an advisory, officials at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control are still urging residents to get their flu shots.

"That (vaccine) is your best protection against the flu and will make the illness less serious if you do get sick", Jeffers noted.

In some cases, the flu can be fatal, particularly in young children and the elderly.

It is claimed that incidence of the flu has soared over the last fortnight and is predicted to spread quickly over the next few weeks. "Influenza vaccination is still the most effective way to protect yourself and your family from getting ill with the flu or from getting severe complications".

There is also a high dose vaccine for people over the age of 65, as well as a vaccine that is injected under the skin and not into the muscle. Influenza can come with a fever, chills, a cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffed nose, body aches, headaches and fatigue. Scientific American explains that while colds and the flu usually both last seven to 10 days, the flu can sometimes hang around for three or four weeks: "The flu virus may not still be there, but you have symptoms long after it's left".

Monterey County Health Officer Dr. Edward Moreno recommends that individuals at least six months of age and older be vaccinated against the flu.
