Anti-Trump demonstrators to accompany Maine's electoral vote

Sanders did better in caucus states, where his enthusiastic supporters outnumbered Clinton backers - including in ME, where he defeated her by a almost 2-1 margin.

On Monday, Maine's four Electoral College Delegates will cast their ballots to officially elect the next president of the United States.

Bright said he wants these young voters to know they are welcome back in the Democratic Party.

According to ME law, Bright should be voting for Hillary Clinton when the state's electors cast their votes Monday.

David Bright, a Sanders supporter, said in a Facebook message that he would vote for the Vermont independent. "If I thought my vote could have helped Secretary Clinton to win the presidency, I would have voted for her on the first round". There is no federal law that requires electors to vote according to the results in their states.

"I cast my vote to represent thousands of Democratic Maine voters - many less than a third my age - who came into Maine politics for the first time this year because of Bernie Sanders".

Bright says he's voting for Sanders, who won Maine's Democratic caucus, was the state party's nominee but he stepped aside offering his support to Clinton during the Democratic National Convention in June, not in anger or spit but because Sanders is the person who won the support of Maine Democrats and deserves at least one of Maine's votes.

ME is also one of 30 states nationwide that requires presidential electors to vote according to how they are assigned. Bright is one of the 3 who were expected to vote Clinton.

The state's electors are scheduled to vote for president at 2 p.m. ET on the floor of Maine's House of Representatives.

In the 2016 election, ME had a historic first: it split its Electoral College votes. He also elaborated that he's doing this because doing so would not change the overall outcome of the election. That effort is expected to fall short because most of the 306 Republican electors have said that they will vote for Trump today.

So far, the Democrats have managed to secure only a single faithless elector for certain, a Texas Republican who will not vote until later Monday afternoon. "But perhaps by encouraging these idealistic voters to stick around, I can change the results of elections to come".

Trump was declared the victor of November's general election, even though he lost the popular vote by almost 2.9 million to Clinton because of his state-by-state tally in Electoral College votes.

"I know a lot of people get confused about why we do this", said Bright.
