Opera Software have launched a native Symbian version of the hugely popular web browser Opera Mini for Nokia smartphones that they say has been optimized for faster performance.
Smooth browsing
The beta version of Opera Mini 5.1 is free and available to download from today for 3,000 different mobile phone models. The browser is liked because it renders full web pages that are visually appealing and smooth. It will adjust to either portrait or landscape modes with a font size option for easier reading. The software compresses web page data by up to 90% resulting in only 10% bandwidth usage and savings on your phone bills.
New features
The software come with a host of new improvements over previous versions including:
- Support for more devices than ever
- Significantly faster start-up time
- Improved page-load and scrolling performance, especially on older devices
- Full support for device text input methods
- Improved fonts
- Device integration for copy & paste, email client and more
- Option to choose default access point — no more annoying dialogs
Large user base
Opera say that Opera Mini is the most popular mobile browser available with over 71 million users around the globe and nearly 37 billion pages processed each month.
Chief Development Office of Opera Software, Christen Krogh, said of the new release “It is Opera’s objective to provide its users with the best possible web-surfing experience on any device,” continuing “Porting Opera Mini to the Symbian programming language provides the largest user base in the smartphone world with the best mobile browsing experience.”
Founded by Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner and Geir Ivarsoey, Opera Software are based in Norway and their shares are traded on the Oslo stock exchange. They employ around 700 people.
